A simple new moon candle ritual takes about 15 to 20 minutes: on or near the night of the new moon, light a candle, take a few slow breaths, write one to three intentions for the month ahead, read them back, and extinguish the flame. The new moon is traditionally associated with beginnings, which is why many people use it as a monthly moment to plan and set intentions.
What you need
- A candle (for example the AltarWell New Moon candle)
- Paper or a journal
- A pen
- Matches or a lighter
- Wick trimmer or scissors
Step by step
- Check the date. Look up this month's new moon date and time. Any evening on the day of the new moon or a day or so either side is fine; there is no fixed rule.
- Set up a quiet spot. Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch and put your paper and pen within reach.
- Light the candle and breathe. Light the candle and take three slow breaths. Notice the flame and the scent for a moment before you start writing.
- Write one to three intentions. Write one to three short intentions for the month ahead. Keep them specific and within your control, such as a habit you want to start or a project you want to begin.
- Read them back. Read the list slowly, aloud or silently, and note one small first step for each intention.
- Extinguish and keep the list. Extinguish the candle when you are done; never leave it burning unattended. Keep the list near the jar and revisit it at the full moon, about two weeks later.
Why the new moon?
The new moon is the start of the lunar cycle, when the moon is not visible from Earth. Across many traditions it is associated with beginnings and fresh starts, so it is a natural monthly reminder to pause and plan. These are traditional associations, offered as cultural context.
Pairing it with the full moon
Many people follow the new moon with a full moon reflection about two weeks later, looking back at the intentions they wrote. See the full moon release ritual guide for that half of the cycle.
