Lighting a candle with the moon

The lunar cycle takes about 29.5 days. People have long used its phases as a gentle rhythm for reflection and intention-setting. Here is what each phase is traditionally associated with, and which AltarWell candle we'd pair with it. For exact dates, see moon phases by month.

New moon

Moon between Earth and Sun; the sky is dark.

Traditionally associated with beginnings, planning and setting intentions. A natural time to write down what you want to focus on for the coming month.

Pair with: New Moon (Sea Salt & Orchid) or Fresh Start (Clean Cotton)

Waxing moon

From new to full, the lit part grows each night.

Traditionally associated with building, momentum and steady effort. Many people use these evenings to revisit their list and take small practical steps.

Pair with: Clarity (Eucalyptus Lavender Herb)

Full moon

Moon opposite the Sun; fully lit, rising around sunset.

Traditionally associated with completion, gratitude and reflection. A good evening to journal about the month and note what went well.

Pair with: Full Moon (Honeysuckle) or Gratitude (Vanilla Bean)

Waning moon

From full back to new, the lit part shrinks.

Traditionally associated with rest, release and clearing space. A quieter stretch for tidying, slowing down and winding down in the evening.

Pair with: Calm (White Sage & Lavender)

A ten-minute new or full moon ritual

  1. Clear a small, heat-safe surface and set the candle down.
  2. Light it, put your phone away, and take three slow breaths.
  3. New moon: write one to three intentions. Full moon: write what you're grateful for and what you'd like to leave behind.
  4. Sit with the flame for a few minutes. Extinguish it before you leave the room.

Questions

When exactly is the new moon or full moon?

Each phase happens at a single instant worldwide. Our 2027 calendar lists every new and full moon in Central Time (Chicago). Any evening close to that time works for a candle ritual.

Do I need to light the candle at the exact time?

No. The exact time is a nice anchor, but the practice is about setting aside a quiet moment. The evening before or after is just as good.

What does a moon ritual involve?

Keep it simple: clear a small space, light the candle, take a few slow breaths, and write or say what you want to focus on. Ten minutes is plenty.
