How to set an intention with a candle

Published · Updated

To set an intention with a candle, choose one short intention, write it down, light the candle in a quiet spot, and spend a few minutes reading the intention and watching the flame before you extinguish it. The candle works as a focus point and a signal that this time is set aside; the practice is about reflection and routine.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Choose one intention. Pick a single, specific intention written in your own words, for example "I want to make time to read each evening." One clear sentence is easier to return to than a long list.
  2. Prepare the space. Clear a small, stable, heat-resistant surface. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch and keep the area free of paper, fabric and drafts.
  3. Write it down. Write the intention on a piece of paper and keep it near the candle, not next to the flame.
  4. Light the candle. Light the candle and take three slow breaths. Let your attention settle on the flame and the scent.
  5. Reflect. Read the intention aloud or silently. Spend a few minutes thinking about one small, practical step that fits it. Some people like to journal here.
  6. Extinguish and keep the note. Snuff or blow out the flame when you finish, and never leave it burning unattended. Keep the note somewhere you will see it, and relight the candle on another evening to revisit it.

Which candle should I use?

Any candle works. Many people match the candle to the moment: the New Moon candle for intentions at the start of the lunar cycle, which is traditionally associated with beginnings; Clarity for journaling and planning; or Fresh Start after a weekly reset.

How long should the candle burn?

The ritual itself can take a few minutes. If it is the candle's first lighting, let it keep burning (while you stay in the room) until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar, usually 2 to 3 hours, so later burns stay even. Never burn it for more than 4 hours at a time.
