To burn a candle safely and evenly, let the first burn continue until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar (usually 2 to 3 hours), trim the wick to 1/4 inch before every lighting, burn for no more than 4 hours at a time, and never leave it unattended. A full first burn sets the candle's memory ring, which helps every later burn melt edge to edge instead of tunneling down the middle.
What you need
- A soy wax candle in a glass jar
- Wick trimmer or scissors
- Matches or a lighter
- Candle snuffer (optional)
Step by step
- Trim the wick. Before every lighting, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch and remove any trimmings from the wax.
- Place it safely. Set the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, children, pets, curtains and anything that can catch fire.
- Plan a full first burn. Light the candle when you have time to stay nearby, and let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar, usually 2 to 3 hours.
- Keep sessions to 4 hours or less. On every burn, extinguish the candle after no more than 4 hours, and always before you sleep or leave the room.
- Let it cool fully. Let the wax harden completely before relighting or moving the jar. The glass stays hot for a while after the flame is out.
- Stop at 1/2 inch. Stop using the candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar.
What is a candle memory ring?
A memory ring is the edge of the melt pool from earlier burns. Wax tends to melt back to that same ring on later lightings. If the first burn is cut short, the ring forms close to the wick and the candle can start tunneling: burning down the middle and leaving a wall of unused wax on the sides.
How to fix tunneling
If a shallow tunnel has formed, give the next few burns longer sessions (up to 4 hours) so the melt pool can widen, and keep the wick trimmed and centered. Deep tunnels are hard to recover, which is why the first burn matters most.
Signs to extinguish and trim
If the flame gets tall, flickers a lot or smokes, extinguish it, let the candle cool, trim the wick to 1/4 inch and relight. Black soot on the glass is usually a sign the wick needs trimming or the candle is in a draft.
